Student Action, an organization at the University of California, Berkeley, fights to make student government accountable to every student, every year. Our organization was founded in 1995 in response to a need for more effective student representation. Since then, Student Action has upheld its core values of providing a platform for every student voice and enhancing the quality of student life. We have consistently delivered tangible results and strive to continue to fulfill that responsibility. Student Action is a party that learns from the past, acts in the present, and builds for the future.
Our History
The Student Action student organization was founded in 1995 by a group of students who were outraged by the incompetence of several ASUC leaders. At that time the ASUC was burdened by a pending lawsuit from the University and saddled with millions of dollars of debt.
Since then a diverse group of Student Action members have been working hard to make the ASUC an effective tool for students. Although they may have varied opinions, Student Action members are united by one common goal; to make student government work for students, not for itself. Student Action strives to enhance student life at the University of California by providing tangible, accessible services and programs for students.
A People’s Party with Loyalty and Experience, APPLE, began as an independent ASUC party promising elected officials that would be dedicated to the humble virtues of transparency, honesty, and competent administration. APPLE was created to stand for loyalty toward the needs and desires of students, for experience and competency in office, and for an end to partisanship that interferes with service to students.
In 2001, APPLE realized the need to create a party specifically to represent the engineering community. At that time, APPLE Engineering was born. The 2002 ASUC election saw the first APPLE Engineering Senator, Misha Leybovich, reach office.
Appreciating the shared goals and visions for the university, APPLE Engineering joined the Student Action coalition in 2004.
Though named UNITE in 1995, UNITE Greek finds its roots in the Berkeley Association Representing Students which has been serving Cal since 1985. The name change did not change the purpose and goals of the group. UNITE Greek works to serve the interests of UC Berkeley’s greater student body while representing the Greek system at Cal.
As a group, members of the UNITE Greek student organization act as ambassadors between the Greek system and the general campus population. Since its inception, UNITE Greek has worked to create a broad coalition to fight for students on the issues of better student safety, solutions for better student parking, and the protection of students’ rights to responsibly engage in opportunities to enhance their college experience.
UNITE Greek joined with Student Action in 1996 and APPLE Engineering in 2004 to form an alliance dedicated to reforming the working dynamic of the ASUC. Visit our elected officials pages to see what we have been doing for you.
