Our City, Our Choice
Students compose 25% of the city of Berkeley, but we have zero representation on the city council. As EAVP, I will ensure that we get a student elected to the council so that students have a voice in issues related to neighborhood safety, housing and fair rent pricing, economic development strategy, and affordable parking. I will also work to institutionalize and grow internships, permanent positions, and student involvement in every level of city government.
Expanding and Redefining External Affairs
UC Berkeley is the number one public university in the world, not just the nation. As EAVP, I will create an International Affairs Department in the ASUC that will host forums on specific issues that are happening worldwide to raise awareness. I will then translate students’ passion into action through partnerships and opportunities for students to get involved with Cal Corps, student groups, campus departments, and off-campus organizations to create a positive impact around the world.
Empower the Student Voice Through Action
In 2012, I led a team to register 8,571 students to vote. I will continue to empower students through expanded voter registration in the Residence Halls so that every student on campus who is eligible to vote is registered to do so. Concurrently, I will work tirelessly to get a second voting student Regent on the Board of Regents. Finally, I will increase the frequency of lobby visits to Sacramento and DC, and work to bring elected officials to campus and hold them accountable to students.

Hi everyone! My name is Safeena Leila Mecklai and I'm running to be your next ASUC External Affairs Vice President with Student Action! I'm a Junior majoring in Media Studies and minoring in Theater and Public Policy. I was born in Vancouver, Canada but raised in Sacramento, California. Outside of class, I like to read, write, make short films, explore, and go on long road trips around California. In the future, I hope to become either an actor or a US Senator... or both!
You've probably seen me on Sproul registering students to vote or encouraging them to learn about Prop 30-- and that's because I really believe in the power of our student body to make change. I'm so excited for this opportunity to run to represent you and make a difference on this campus, this city, this state, this country, and maybe even the world!
Thanks for your support and I'm so humbled by this opportunity to serve as your next ASUC External Affairs Vice President. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Go bears!
